EsNew

The Rhino’s Oasis
2024

Acrylic on canvas, 26X18

“EsNew is a take on “esnú” a phrase in Puerto Rican dialect referring to naked. This series of artworks I made during my teenage years, and continuously add on to, it is about learning to love my body and feeling proud of it. My use of “new” in the title was because this process of grappling and understanding myself through art was new to me. My hope is that others alike can also go through this process of understanding, accepting and loving their bodies.

By removing the expected face, or what identifies the person being depicted and replacing it with animals, flowers and other motifs adds ambiguity. This allows anyone to insert themselves into the work. At times it allows for a layered meaning to be formed beyond its original intentions. Giving room for viewers to speculate beyond the nakedness present.”
